Chalon-sur-Saône is the second city of Burgundy. Born of the Saône as harbour of Eduens, in the Gallic period, it knew its hours of glory at the beginning and at the end of the Middle Ages, as capital of the Merovingian realm of Burgundy, then as place of big international fairs.
The district Saint Vincent, around the cathedral, is its historic heart. The street and the square Saint Vincent widely kept a medieval aspect, with their houses with half-timberings.
The cathedral associates all the variants of the Romanic and Gothic styles, the XIth in the XVth century. The small convent of the finishing Middle Ages is a haven of peace in full city, whereas the high neoGothic towers of the building dominate the weekly markets and serve as picturesque wing, Every third weekend of July, for some troops of wandering entertainers, during the festival " Chalon in the Street ".
Rich in its museums - the Denon museum dedicated to the Fine art and to the archaeology and the Niepce museum dedicated to the inventor of the photography-, enchantress by its green spaces as the immense rose garden and by its perspectives sometimes intimate, sometimes grand, Chalon-sur-Saône invites in more than a walk. |
